A Clinical Study on Urinary Tract Infection in Neonate


Abstract
This study done on 100 neonates with urinary tract infection who were diagnosed at Il Sin Christian Hospital from Jan. 1986 to Dec. 1992.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) The incidence was 0.8% of total neonatal inpatients during same period. Fifty-nine patients were male and 41 patients were female, with male to female ratio of 1.4:1.
2) Non-specific and systemic symptoms such as jaundice, fever, vomiting, poor feeding and diarrhea were observed in this age groups.
3) Hematologic findings showed leukocytosis(white blood cell 20,000/§§ or more) in 26 patients and low hemoglobin (¡Â10gm/dl) was not found.
Urinalysis showed pyuria in 60 patients, proteinuria in 10 patients and hematuria in 4 patients.
4) E. coli was the most common etiologic agent, cultured in 54 patients.
Others were Enterobacter, Klebsiella and Staphylococcus in order.
5) In vitro antimicrobial susceptibility test showed E.coli was sensitive to Maxalactam, Amikin and Cefotaxim.
6) Blood cultures were obtained in 42 and were positive in 6 cases.
7) Obstetic complications were low birth weight in 15 patients and cesarian section delivery in 18 patients.
8) We performed urine culture again after 48hrs from the beginning of therapy and 86.5% of case became sterile.
